NYC Natural Gas Alarm Requirements

WHAT DOES NYC REQUIRE?

NYC Local Law 157 of 2016 requires natural gas detecting devices in covered residential buildings.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE

Property owners are responsible for providing and installing required natural gas alarms and replacing them at the end of their useful life.

WHERE TO INSTALL

When a fuel-gas-burning appliance is located within a dwelling, the natural gas alarm must generally be installed in the same room and at least 3 feet but no more than 10 feet horizontally from the appliance.

TYPE OF ALARM

Applicable natural gas alarms must be listed and labeled to UL 1484 and installed in accordance with NFPA 715, as adopted and modified by New York City.


BUILDING TYPES

The requirements generally apply to covered R-1, R-2 and R-3 residential occupancies, including private dwellings and Class A and Class B multiple dwellings. Buildings without gas piping or gas service may be exempt.
